The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has come out to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo, who was found hanging in a police cell at Narumoru Police Station on September 20, 2026. The agency says it wanted to set the record straight after various claims started circulating on social media about what happened.
According to the DCI, Osiemo was arrested in connection with an assault case that happened on July 2, 2026. A woman reported that Osiemo, who had previously worked as a farmhand for her, came to her home and attacked her with a knife, leaving her with serious wounds.
The woman reported the matter at Narumoru Police Station and was admitted to Tumutumu Hospital, where she stayed for nine days to recover from her injuries.
The case was initially handled by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Nanyuki, but the office later directed that the DCI take over the investigations. On September 3, 2026, the case file was forwarded to the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer in Kieni East, where detectives began tracking Osiemo down. He was found hiding in Kisii and arrested on September 18, 2026 with help from the SCCIO based in Masaba North.
Osiemo was first taken to Keroka Police Station and later transferred to Narumoru Police Station on September 19. He was supposed to appear before a court on Monday, September 21, to answer to the assault charges.
However, on the morning of September 20, officers discovered him hanging from ventilation grills inside his cell. The scene was immediately processed in the presence of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, senior police officers, and one of his relatives.
The DCI says Osiemo's body was moved to the Narumoru mortuary where an autopsy is pending. The agency has since handed over the investigation into his death to the IPOA, and says it will cooperate fully with the oversight authority. The DCI also extended its condolences to Osiemo's family, saying it shares in their grief during this difficult time.
The agency has committed to ensuring a transparent investigation aimed at establishing the full circumstances of his death, and has urged the public to rely only on verified official information rather than unconfirmed claims spreading on social media.
