Political activist Morara Kebaso has announced that he has left his political party, the Independent Party of Kenya, and will now join the Jubilee Party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The activist and businessman made the announcement during an interview on Obinna TV on Monday, June 29, saying the decision was informed by what he termed political realities in the Gusii region where he has political interests.
According to Kebaso, he is now seeking to vie for the Borabu parliamentary seat in the upcoming elections, which is part of the reason why he abandoned his party.
He explained that in the Gusii region, political success requires alignment with dominant political formations, suggesting that smaller parties may struggle to gain traction with voters.
The activist emphasized that to effectively serve the people in his region, he had to go with the realities of the day.
Kebaso first gained nationwide attention during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, when he pioneered a new form of government accountability that resonated with Kenyans.
His political ambitions became clearer when he announced his presidential bid in May 2025. During that announcement, he unveiled his manifesto and introduced the Inject Party, pledging reforms in the country if elected as the Head of State, with a special focus on empowering Kenya's youth through the agriculture sector.
However, just a few weeks after announcing his presidential bid, Kebaso said he had quit politics altogether, citing the consistent criticism he had often faced.
In a statement on June 23, 2025, he declared that he had finally left politics and was now free to live his life, run his business, make money, travel the world, see his friends, and visit a bar without worrying about being photographed.
Despite his earlier declaration about leaving politics, Kebaso has now made a strategic political move by joining the Jubilee Party. He pointed out that the party is popular in Kisii and Nyamira counties because former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, a regional leader, has announced his presidential bid with the party.
Kebaso noted that political success in the Gusii region depends on having alignment with parties that already have strong voter support, saying that without this alignment, his political ambitions could end before they even begin.
When asked about his Inject Party, Kebaso stated that it will remain in the cupboard for now as he works with the Jubilee Party.
He emphasized that they have to go with the political realities of the day, acknowledging that the current political landscape requires pragmatic decisions rather than idealistic stands.
