Kenya Airways is making a major move that has excited many travellers across the country. The national carrier is bringing back its Boeing 777-300ER, a massive aircraft that has been away for a whole decade.
This iconic plane, registered as 5Y-KZX, was on lease to Turkish Airlines since 2016, but it is finally coming home and will be back in Nairobi from July 7th. According to the airline, this move is aimed at boosting its network capacity and supporting its recovery strategy.
Here is some exciting news for local travellers. Before the big plane goes back to flying long-haul routes, Kenya Airways has decided to give Kenyans a rare shot at experiencing it on the short 45-minute hop from Nairobi to Mombasa.
Acting CEO George Kamal said they deliberately chose this route so that Kenyans get the first opportunity to experience this iconic jet. The aircraft will be running the domestic route from July 13 to July 16, 2026.
Now, for the icing on the cake the airline is offering a massive 50% discount on flights during those dates. This means you can fly Economy from as low as Ksh 6,600, compared to the normal price of Ksh 13,245.
If you want to travel in style, Business Class will cost you Ksh 12,335 instead of the usual Ksh 24,585. This promotion is also part of the countdown to the airline's 50th anniversary, giving Kenyans a chance to celebrate and enjoy world-class service at a fraction of the cost.
This aircraft is no small machine. It’s a real giant, capable of carrying between 365 to 390 passengers in a standard layout, with high-density configurations holding over 400. It has a maximum speed of Mach 0.84 (895 km/h) and a wingspan of 212 feet (64.8 m) featuring iconic raked wingtips that help reduce drag.
After its short domestic tour, the B777 is scheduled to resume long-haul operations on the Nairobi to London route from July 17, 2026, marking a significant return to international service. This is a great chance for Kenyans to experience a piece of aviation history right in their own backyard.
