Democrats Take Control of US Congress as Voters Punish Trump Over Cost of Living

Democrats have won control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the US midterm elections. This means they will hold power in Congress for the rest of Donald Trump's time in office.

The result is a major setback for the president. Mr Trump admitted that the Democrats "did a good job". He also accepted that the war with Iran and rising fuel prices hurt his party at the ballot box. Analysts say there is little mystery in what happened. Many Americans are angry about the high cost of living, and they blamed the man in the White House.

In the Senate, the Democrats won several seats in states that normally vote Republican. These include Texas and Ohio. They also won in Kansas, a state that last sent a Democrat to the Senate almost a century ago. In Texas, James Talarico became the first Democrat to win a Senate seat there since 1988.

With Congress now in their hands, the Democrats can block many of Mr Trump's plans for the next two years. Some reports say they could even try to impeach him for the third time.

One race is still too close to call. In Michigan, the Senate contest has not yet been declared. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has already announced that he has won. He told his supporters that voters took a chance on the "unlikeliest of candidates".

Scenes at his campaign party were full of joy. His supporters went wild when he walked onto the stage, chanting his name and cheering loudly. Many held up their phones to capture what they called a historic moment, since El-Sayed could become the first Muslim man elected to the Senate from the state. Some people hugged each other and wept. The crowd also repeated his campaign promises, including getting money out of politics, putting more money in people's pockets, and Medicare for all.

El-Sayed told the crowd that the campaign against him was one of the ugliest they had seen in their lifetime, then thanked them for standing with him. Progressives across the country are celebrating his performance as a big win. One supporter said they never want to hear again that progressives cannot win.

It is important to note that votes in Michigan are still being counted, and no winner has been officially projected.

Former US President Barack Obama said the results show that Americans want change. In a message on X, he said voters have asked for politics that unites people instead of dividing them. He also said they want leaders who offer real solutions to the problems families face.

Mr Obama has campaigned with several Democratic candidates in key states such as Michigan and Georgia. He said the work now is to make changes wherever Democrats have power, stop further damage, and prepare the ground for the future.
