Citizen television will miss one of its most familiar faces. Yvonne Okwara-Matole has announced that she is leaving Citizen TV, the station owned by Royal Media Services (RMS), after eight years of anchoring and hosting on the channel.
Okwara's journey with Citizen TV started in May 2018, when she left KTN News to return to Royal Media Services. It was a homecoming of sorts, since she had worked at RMS's radio side earlier in her career. Over the years, she built a strong name for herself with her calm delivery and sharp questions.
She anchored prime-time bulletins, hosted current affairs programmes, and took viewers through the big political and economic stories of the day. Many Kenyans will remember her from News Gang and The Explainer, two shows that became must-watch for anyone who loves a good national debate.
In her farewell message, Okwara thanked the station and its viewers for giving her the freedom to practise journalism as fearlessly as she could. She said she would miss everyone at the station terribly, and she joked that she might end up going viral for crying on TV.
RMS Editorial Director Linus Kaikai also spoke about her exit. He said the departure was one of the toughest he had handled in his time leading the newsroom, and that the industry would feel her absence. He wished her well in whatever she chooses to do next.
