The Equitable Party (TEP) is set to become the Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM), after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) started the formal process to approve the change. The Registrar's office confirmed this in a letter dated 13 October 2026, signed by the Registrar of Political Parties and CEO, J.C. Lorionokou.
The party kicked off the process on 8 October 2026, when its National Executive Committee (NEC) met and voted to change the name. Party officials then sent the ORPP the paperwork, including the meeting notice, the signed list of members who attended, and the NEC resolution. They also filed Statutory Form PP.10, which is the official form for changing a party's name. To show the public, the party published the notice in the Daily Nation on 10 October 2026 and also posted it on its official website.
After checking everything, the Registrar's office said the documents were in order and has started the gazettement process. This is the step where the name change is officially recorded in the Kenya Gazette, under Section 20(1)(d) of the Political Parties Act, Cap. 7D.
The party is not done yet, though. The law gives members of the public fourteen days from the date of the newspaper publication to raise concerns or object to the new name. Once that period ends, the party must tell the ORPP what representations, if any, it received and how it dealt with them. This is required under Section 20(4) of the same Act.
Whether the change will shake up the political scene depends on what happens next. Members of the public now have a window to speak up, and the ORPP will have to decide whether the new name meets the law. Until the gazettement is complete, TEP remains the registered name of the party.
