Chicago is buzzing right now. The White Sox have done something many people thought was impossible. They are in the playoffs, and they are up 2-0 against the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Division Series. One more win and they move on to the Championship Series.
Wednesday's game will be their first playoff match at home since 2021, and that alone has fans excited. For five whole years, the South Side had nothing to celebrate in October. Not many people expected the team to be in this position, especially after how badly things went.
It has been a hard road for this team. After a decent 81-81 season in 2022, the White Sox fell off a cliff. They lost 101 games in 2023, then 121 in 2024, and 102 more last year. Three straight seasons with 100 or more losses is a record of its own. Now this same team has become the first to make the playoffs after going through a run like that. The fans who stayed loyal through all the losing are finally getting their reward.
The 2024 season makes this story even more interesting. In late September that year, the White Sox were just one loss away from setting the record for most losses in a 162-game season. The few fans who showed up for the final home series were hoping to see history, and the team actually won its last three home games before losing its 121st on the road. For the supporters, it was another painful chapter in a season nobody wants to remember.
Pitcher Grant Taylor, who has recorded saves in both of the team's wins over Cleveland, says the fans deserve this moment. He told reporters that the supporters have waited a very long time for something like this, and that they kept coming out even when the team was struggling. For him, giving those fans a home playoff game is something special.
The numbers show just how big this is. The White Sox have not clinched a playoff series in front of their home crowd since 1906. That is more than a hundred years of waiting. So on Wednesday, they have another chance to make history.
Whatever happens next, this season has already given Chicago plenty to talk about. The fans are ready, the players are ready, and the whole South Side will be watching.
