Ogeta Opens Up on Makau Mutua, Says He Still Struggles to Forgive

Maurice Ogeta, a former bodyguard of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, has spoken publicly about his falling out with Professor Makau Mutua. In a media interview on NTV's programme Unmasking Raila's Shadow, Ogeta said he is not sure he will ever forgive Mutua for livestreaming from inside Odinga's car during the 2023 Azimio anti-government protests.

Ogeta said the problem was the decision to broadcast from within the vehicle. He argued that such footage could be watched by friends and enemies alike. According to him, he began asking questions after contacts in the United States and South Africa called to ask what was happening. He says he went to find out who was streaming and discovered it was Mutua. He saw this as a serious breach of trust within Odinga's inner circle.

Days later, Ogeta was abducted. He has since described that ordeal as "a blessing in disguise," and linked it to the period when the demonstrations died down and Odinga cancelled a planned trip to London. Ogeta also claims Sh14.7 million was stolen from him, and that part of the money belonged to Odinga. He suggested that some people within his own circle had exposed him. Nearly three years later, he admits he is still not sure he has fully forgiven those he believes let him down.

It is important to note that Ogeta's account does not, on its own, prove that Mutua was responsible for his abduction or that the livestreaming led to it. These are his personal recollections and claims.

Dennis Onyango, Odinga's long-time communications aide, has also reportedly criticised Mutua during an appearance on Citizen TV. Some observers said his remarks came close to allegations of betrayal. Together, these accounts have fuelled speculation about tensions within Odinga's former inner circle, and they raise wider questions about trust, security and how sensitive information was handled during a tense political period.
