Oburu Oginga Is Out of Hospital, and He Says He'll Be Open About His Health

ODM leader Oburu Oginga is now back home after a hospital stay that had Kenyans talking for days. The Siaya senator was discharged from Nairobi Hospital on October 19, having been admitted on October 4. Many people had been watching closely, mostly because he was not seen in public for a long time.

The last time Oburu appeared in public was on October 15, the day he turned 83. Photos of him celebrating his birthday in hospital were shared online, and the date also marked one year since the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Oburu used the day to reflect on his birthday and on the bond he had with Raila. He said that even death had not broken that connection, and he described it as something that goes beyond physical presence.

The hospital visit set off a lot of talk on social media. People guessed about how sick he really was, and the speculation grew as the country prepared for events to remember Raila a year after his death. Earlier, Oburu had waved away reports that he was seriously ill, saying he was only there for a routine medical check-up. At the time, he said he was resting at his Nairobi home and pushed back on claims that his condition was serious or that visitors were being blocked.

Still, he made a promise to Kenyans. He said that if he ever became truly sick, he would tell them himself, because he is a person who believes in being open. It is a clear line, and now people will hold him to it.

His discharge also comes at a busy time for ODM. The party took over leadership after Raila's death and is still working out its direction as it gets ready for the 2027 General Election. A healthy and active leader will matter a lot for the party as it makes its next moves.
