Detectives from Kitengela Police Station have arrested a 36-year-old woman suspected of pretending to be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Police say Maureen Auma Andary obtained Sh82,000 from a client by false pretences.
Detectives acting on intelligence caught up with the suspect at Chuna Mall in Kitengela. Police say she had been presenting herself as a qualified lawyer and carrying out transactions on that basis. Investigators also say she was claiming to work with a law firm in Kitengela, which was not true.
The case came to light on September 11, 2026, when someone reported suspicious dealings linked to her. Police then started following the trail, which led them to the arrest.
Investigators say the suspect took the money from a client after telling them she would file certain court applications for a case pending at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi. Police have not said whether the court papers were ever filed or whether the case was real.
The suspect is now in custody, and detectives are checking whether other people may also have lost money to her. Police are asking anyone who dealt with her, or who paid her for legal services, to come forward and share what they know.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has also urged Kenyans to be careful. Members of the public should check the credentials of anyone offering legal or other professional services before handing over money or personal documents. You can confirm an advocate's status through the Law Society of Kenya before you pay anyone.
