A tragic case unfolding in West Pokot has left the community reeling after a 15-year-old girl lost her life at Kapenguria Referral Hospital following what authorities describe as a brutal assault. The teenager, who was attacked on the evening of September 22, died just hours later in the early morning of the following day after developing severe breathing complications while undergoing treatment.
According to police reports, the girl was allegedly attacked by a known neighbour in Kipkomo at around 8:30 PM as she made her way home to Kamaua village. What started as an assault escalated into something far more sinister, with investigators indicating that the attack involved both sexual and physical violence.
Witnesses say the young woman was rescued from the scene bleeding from her mouth and complaining of severe chest and back pain injuries that would later prove fatal.
At the hospital, medical staff discovered the extent of the injuries sustained during the assault. The girl had been forcefully pressed during the attack, causing internal injuries that were not immediately apparent.
She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit after her condition rapidly deteriorated, but the damage had already been done. Early Wednesday morning, just hours after receiving treatment, she passed away despite the best efforts of the medical team.
The incident has sparked outrage in the region, particularly given its brutal nature and the age of the victim. Police moved swiftly, processing the crime scene before the body was transferred to Nairobi City Funeral Home, where it remains pending a postmortem examination that should shed more light on the exact cause of death.
In a significant development, authorities have arrested a 49-year-old man in connection with the case. He is currently in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding both the assault and the young girl's subsequent death.
Police have also noted that the case appears linked to an earlier mob-justice incident, suggesting that community tensions may have played a role in events that night.
The case serves as another grim reminder of the safety challenges facing young people in rural Kenya and raises serious questions about justice, community protection, and the ability of law enforcement to prevent such tragedies before they occur.
