Kenya Destroys Massive Sh8.2 Billion Methamphetamine Haul in Major Security Crackdown

Kenya took a significant step in its fight against drug trafficking on Wednesday when senior government officials oversaw the destruction of a colossal haul of methamphetamine valued at approximately Sh8.2 billion.

The dramatic operation brought together top-level security personnel at Bamburi Cement in Mombasa, sending a strong message about the country's commitment to tackling the narcotics menace.

The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, led the charge alongside senior officials from the National Police Service (NPS) and other key stakeholders.

Their presence at the destruction site underscored the gravity of the operation and the coordinated effort required to combat organised drug networks operating through Kenya's maritime routes.

The massive drug consignment has quite a story behind it. Back in October 2025, Kenya's security agencies pulled off an impressive maritime operation that caught the suspects' ship off our coast in the Indian Ocean.

The multi-agency team worked together seamlessly, intercepting the vessel carrying the suspected narcotics before it could slip through to distribution networks. It was exactly the kind of teamwork that leaves traffickers with nowhere to hide.

Once the legal paperwork was sorted out and the courts gave their blessing, there was only one logical step left: destroy the drugs completely. That's exactly what happened at Bamburi Cement, where heightened security was put in place as the consignment went up in smoke under court supervision. You could almost feel the message reverberating across criminal networks  Kenya is serious about this.

What makes this operation truly impressive is the sheer coordination it took to pull off. Multiple security and law-enforcement agencies put aside any turf wars and worked as one unified force. That kind of inter-agency collaboration, backed by strong international partnerships, is what it takes to really disrupt the drug trafficking networks that have been trying to use our country as a transit point.

Intelligence-led operations, close cooperation between agencies, and international teamwork   these are the ingredients Kenya's security forces are using to keep communities safe and prevent narcotics from destroying lives. The message to drug traffickers is simple: Kenya is not open for business.
