UAE Tightens Health Rules for Kenyan Job Seekers: What You Need to Know Before You Fly

The journey to the United Arab Emirates has always been a dream for many Kenyans looking for better opportunities abroad. From construction workers in Dubai to nannies in Abu Dhabi, thousands of our countrymen and women have found their way to the Gulf nation in search of greener pastures.

But before you pack your bags and book that ticket, there are some important new health requirements that you must be aware of.

The UAE government has made it clear that anyone applying for a work or residence visa must first pass mandatory medical tests. This is not just a small formality, it is a serious requirement that could determine whether you get that job or not.

The authorities are looking for communicable diseases, and if you test positive for certain conditions, your visa application could be rejected right there and then.

What Tests Are We Talking About?

First and foremost, you must test negative for HIV and tuberculosis, commonly known as TB. These are the big ones that the UAE is really strict about.

But depending on the kind of job you are going for, there might be even more tests waiting for you. If you are going to work as a domestic worker, nanny, driver, food handler, or in a salon, you will also need to show that you are clear of syphilis and Hepatitis B.

And for our sisters going to work as female domestic workers, there is an additional requirement, you must provide a negative pregnancy test.

The TB Screening Situation

When it comes to tuberculosis screening, things can get a bit complicated depending on which emirate you are heading to. Each emirate has its own way of doing things, which can be confusing for many applicants.

Since 2016, there has been a consistent policy where expatriates renewing their residence visas must undergo TB screening. This means it is not just a one-time thing when you first arrive, but something you need to keep in mind throughout your stay.

A Popular Destination for Kenyans

The UAE has become home to a significant number of Kenyans, with estimates suggesting that between 30,000 and 50,000 of our people are currently living and working there.

This is not surprising given the opportunities available in sectors like hospitality, healthcare, construction, and domestic work. Our people have built a reputation for being hardworking and reliable, which is why employers in the UAE keep coming back to Kenya for workers.

Preparing for Your Journey

If you are planning to go to the UAE for work, it is important to prepare yourself for these medical tests well in advance. Do not wait until the last minute because you might find yourself in a difficult situation.

Make sure you get tested at approved medical centres and that your results are valid and up to date. It is also a good idea to understand the specific requirements for your particular job and the emirate you will be working in.

The truth is, these health requirements are not meant to be a barrier but rather to protect both the workers and the host country. The UAE wants to ensure that everyone coming in is healthy and can contribute positively to their society.

As Kenyans, we have always been resilient and adaptable, and with the right preparation, there is no reason why we cannot meet these requirements and continue to thrive in the UAE.

Remember, knowledge is power, and being informed about these requirements can save you from disappointment and wasted resources. So before you start dreaming about the tall buildings and tax-free income, make sure your health records are in order.

It could be the difference between landing that dream job and having to come back home with your dreams shattered.

The road to the UAE may have some health hurdles, but with proper preparation, our Kenyan brothers and sisters will continue to make their mark in this wealthy Gulf nation.
