Detectives have arrested a man who was posing as a police officer after he was caught with an illegal pistol and over 100 rounds of ammunition in the early hours of yesterday.
The suspect, identified as Philemon Kiplangat Chepkwony, was cornered following a swift police response to a distress call that came from L'Arc Casino, located within Yaya Centre in the upmarket Kilimani area.
The arrest came after officers received an emergency alert from the casino and rushed to the scene in what turned out to be a breakthrough moment for the investigations team.
When detectives arrived, they found Chepkwony inside a black motor vehicle bearing registration number KCJ 468Z, where he was immediately taken into custody without incident.
A thorough search of the suspect's vehicle revealed quite a collection of incriminating items. Officers recovered a CZ 75 SP-01 pistol that had not been registered, an empty 9mm magazine, a pair of handcuffs, and perhaps most telling of all, a fake Certificate of Appointment that falsely identified him as a Police Constable.
He was also carrying a fake firearm certificate, which made it clear that he had gone to great lengths to make his impersonation appear legitimate.
But the discovery did not end with the vehicle search. After being interrogated, Chepkwony led the detectives to his rented house situated in Waluku Village within Dagoretti North. What they found there was even more alarming.
Inside the house, investigators recovered an additional 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition that had been carefully packed into two separate boxes, each containing 50 rounds. This raised serious questions about what the suspect had been planning.
Right now, Chepkwony remains in police custody as he awaits to be arraigned in court. The investigations team continues to work around the clock to piece together the full picture of his criminal activities.
Detectives are determined to establish where he sourced the firearm and ammunition from, and they are also looking into the extent of his impersonation activities and whether there are other crimes linked to his operations.
The items that were recovered during the arrest, along with the impounded black vehicle, have been secured as evidence and will be used in the court proceedings against the suspect.
