Young cyclists from Starehe Boys' Centre received a rousing send-off in Busia County this week as they embarked on an ambitious 14-day cycling journey to Mombasa. The Griffins Memorial Bikerthon, as the expedition is known, represents more than just a test of endurance – it is a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of education and transformation that has defined Starehe Boys' Centre for decades.
The cycling team, composed of energetic young riders from the centre, pedalled off with the full backing of Busia County Government, signalling strong support for an initiative that seeks to raise much-needed funds for the education of underprivileged boys.
Beyond fundraising, however, the bikerthon honours the memory and vision of Dr. Geoffrey Griffin, the founder of Starehe Boys' Centre, whose dedication to youth education has touched thousands of young lives across Kenya.
County Secretary Oscar Juma, himself an alumnus of the centre, took the opportunity during the flag-off ceremony to praise the cyclists for their courage in championing such a worthy cause.
In his remarks, Juma emphasised how the initiative perfectly aligns with the County Government's commitment to empowering youth through quality education.
He expressed his confidence that the team would complete their journey safely and successfully, reaching Mombasa with their heads held high.

The gathering also brought together the Director of the Griffins Memorial Bikerthon, members of the Starehe Boys' Centre Alumni Association from the Busia Chapter, and dedicated staff members from the centre. Their presence reflected the genuine community spirit surrounding this initiative.
