The quiet town of Voi was thrown into a frenzy yesterday after detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit pulled off a major operation that saw them intercept a trailer loaded with a massive consignment of cannabis valued at approximately Sh24.7 million.
The operation, which was carried out in broad daylight within Voi Township, left many residents shocked as they watched the police swoop in on what appeared to be just another ordinary truck passing through the area.
According to police reports, the detectives had been acting on intelligence information that had been gathered over several days.
The officers from DCI ANU Mombasa and DCI ANU Voi, working together with their colleagues from Voi Police Station, had been closely monitoring the movements of a particular Scania truck that was towing a trailer.
When the vehicle finally entered Voi Township, the officers moved in swiftly and brought it to a halt.
What followed was a thorough search of the vehicle that left the officers stunned. Hidden underneath what seemed like ordinary cargo, the detectives discovered eleven gunny bags that were packed to the brim with cannabis.
Upon weighing the narcotics, it was established that the total weight of the cannabis was a staggering 825 kilograms, an amount that could have caused serious damage to the youth and community if it had reached its intended destination.
The driver of the truck, identified as Fredrick Otieno Ogode, and his accomplice, Edwin Ochieng Otieno, did not have time to escape as the officers moved in and arrested them on the spot. The two suspects were taken into lawful custody together with the vehicle and the recovered narcotics.
They are currently being processed at the police station pending their arraignment in court where they are expected to face serious charges related to drug trafficking.
This latest bust comes at a time when the government has been intensifying its war against drugs and substance abuse in the country.
The Anti-Narcotics Unit has been working tirelessly to curb the trafficking of illegal substances, and this successful operation in Voi is being seen as a major victory in their efforts.
Residents of Voi have welcomed the arrest, saying that drug peddlers have been causing chaos in their community and that this seizure will send a strong message to other dealers.
The police have warned that they will not relent in their efforts to rid the country of illegal drugs and have urged members of the public to continue providing them with information that can lead to such arrests.
The two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court as soon as the processing is completed, where they will answer to charges of trafficking in narcotic drugs.
