Detectives have finally caught up with three suspects believed to be behind the terrifying armed robbery that happened at Chaiiwali Restaurant along General Mathenge Road in Westlands. The arrest comes after weeks of intense investigation that saw police officers track down the gang members to their hideout in Githurai Mwiki.
According to reports from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the operation was intelligence-led, with DCI headquarters detectives storming an apartment where the suspects had been hiding since the robbery.
The officers moved swiftly after receiving credible information about the whereabouts of the wanted criminals.
What followed was a dramatic scene that could easily pass for a movie. The three suspects, upon realising that detectives were closing in on them, decided to make a run for it.
They attempted a daring escape through the back of the building by climbing down from the sixth floor.
However, their luck ran out when members of the public noticed the commotion and raised an alarm, alerting the detectives who quickly moved in and arrested them.
The suspects have been identified as Edison Mukama, a 22-year-old Rwandan national who also goes by the alias Musa Abdul, Adens Kikanga aged 25, and 25-year-old John Njuguna Githinji. Police say a female accomplice managed to escape during the chaotic operation and is currently being pursued by investigators.
After the arrests, detectives conducted a thorough search of the suspects' premises in Githurai Kimbo within Manguo area. The search bore fruit when officers recovered two firearms that are believed to have been used in the robbery.
The weapons recovered include a Mini Beretta pistol that was loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition and a Retay Falcon pistol that had five rounds of the same ammunition.
The firearms have been taken to the National Police Service Forensic Laboratory where they will undergo ballistics examination to determine whether they were used in the Chaiiwali robbery or any other violent crimes that have been reported in the area recently.
Preliminary investigations have already linked the three suspects to the robbery that was captured on CCTV cameras on July 4, 2026.
In that footage, armed criminals were seen storming the popular restaurant, terrorising customers who were enjoying their meals, and making away with mobile phones and other valuables.
The gang even fired shots into the air as they made their escape on motorcycles, causing panic among patrons and staff.
The suspects are currently being held in police custody as detectives continue with their investigations. The police have also intensified efforts to track down the remaining members of the gang who are still at large, with the aim of completely dismantling the criminal network that has been causing fear in the Westlands area.
Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station as the manhunt for the escaped female accomplice continues.
