Suspect in Brutal Murder of 25-Year-Old Woman Arrested While Fleeing to Uganda

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Homicide Bureau have finally arrested the main suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Joy Kanini Gathu, bringing to an end a tense manhunt that had kept the nation on edge for weeks.

The suspect, identified as John Nderitu Mureithi, was nabbed on the night of July 10, 2026, along the Nanyuki–Isiolo Road in Meru County as he allegedly attempted to escape to Uganda.

According to reports from the DCI, the arrest came after intelligence-led operations that had been ongoing since the victim's body parts were discovered scattered in different locations.

The suspect was intercepted by detectives who had been tracking his movements, and he was immediately taken into custody.

Upon his arrest, officers conducted a thorough search which led to the recovery of four mobile phones, including the deceased's handset, which is now being held as a key exhibit in the case. The suspect has since been booked at Kiganjo Police Station where he is being held as investigations continue.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that on June 9, 2026, a confrontation broke out between the suspect and the deceased while they were inside his house in Ngangarithi Estate, Nyeri. What started as a disagreement quickly turned fatal, leading to the young woman's death. But it is what happened after that has left many Kenyans in shock.

Detectives have established that the suspect went ahead and dismembered the body, then disposed of the remains at different locations in what investigators believe was a calculated effort to hide the crime and make it difficult for police to piece together what really happened.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with many wondering how such a heinous act could take place.

The gruesome nature of the crime has sparked conversations about safety and the need for justice for victims of violent crimes.

The DCI has assured the public that they are leaving no stone unturned in their investigation and are committed to ensuring that the suspect faces the full force of the law.

The suspect is expected to be presented before court tomorrow, Monday, July 13, 2026, where detectives will be seeking custodial orders to allow them more time to complete their investigations.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has extended their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Joy Kanini Gathu, promising that they will conduct a thorough, fair, and impartial investigation to ensure that justice is served for the young woman whose life was cut short in such a brutal manner.

As the case unfolds, Kenyans will be watching closely to see how the judicial system handles this matter and whether the family of the deceased will finally get the closure they deserve.
