Suspect Arrested in Brutal Murder of TUK Lecturer Edgar Mokua

Homicide detectives have finally made a breakthrough in the murder case of Edgar Mokua, a lecturer at the Technical University of Kenya, whose body was discovered days after he vanished from his Lavington home.

The suspect, identified as Richard Gikue Mbugua, was arrested at Blue Estate in Ruiru after an intensive manhunt that saw detectives piece together the lecturer's final moments before his death.

Mokua was last seen alive on July 6, 2026, when he left his residence at Princes Park in Lavington around 4:20 in the afternoon. When he failed to return home, his worried family reported him missing at Muthangari Police Station.

Days later, on July 11, his body was found lying at the City Mortuary, where it had been taken by officers from Kiamumbi Police Station on July 7 after it was recovered along Kamiti Road near Woodcreek Academy.

The case quickly took a complicated turn, forcing homicide detectives to take over the investigation. Through painstaking work, they managed to reconstruct Mokua's final movements on the night he disappeared.

According to investigators, the lecturer spent several hours at Kettle Club in Lavington before moving to Ibiza Club at Lavington Mall around 11 p.m., where he was in the company of two men and a woman.

While at the club, Mokua reportedly struck up a conversation with a woman who was sitting alone at the counter. At around 3:30 a.m., his companions left the club, leaving him behind.

Moments later, he joined the woman at the counter. CCTV footage later captured the pair leaving the club together at around 4:41 a.m., with Mokua carrying two tumblers. Outside the club, they boarded a grey Toyota Ractis with registration number KBZ 002R.

Detectives further established that the same vehicle was used to dump Mokua's body along Kamiti Road before speeding away from the scene.

Guided by forensic intelligence, the team launched a manhunt that led to Mbugua's arrest. The grey Toyota Ractis has also been recovered and is being held as a key exhibit in the case.

However, the mystery surrounding Mokua's death is not yet fully solved. A post-mortem examination was unable to conclusively establish the cause of death, prompting detectives to order a toxicological analysis to determine whether the lecturer may have been drugged before his death.

The suspect remains in police custody undergoing processing pending arraignment, while homicide detectives continue pursuing additional leads to identify and apprehend other suspects believed to be still at large.
