Police Tighten Security Across Nairobi as Saba Saba Commemorations Approach

Security has been beefed up across Nairobi as the country prepares to mark the annual Saba Saba commemorations on July 7. Police have mounted roadblocks and security checkpoints on major roads leading into and within the Central Business District, with officers maintaining a visible presence at strategic locations across the city.

The heightened deployment comes amid speculation that pro-democracy demonstrations could be staged during the commemorations, which have historically been used as a platform for protests on governance and national accountability issues.

Police checkpoints have been set up at various entry points, subjecting motorists to security screening as part of the operation to maintain law and order during the anniversary.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Monday, a police spokesperson said the service was only aware of rumours circulating about possible protests but stressed that any police operations would be guided by the law.

The officer noted that there had been talk of demonstrations, but that the force would stick to lawful procedures in managing any situation that may arise.

Saba Saba, observed every July 7, holds significant meaning in Kenya's political history. The day commemorates the 1990 pro-democracy movement that pushed for the reintroduction of multi-party democracy in the country.

Over the years, the anniversary has evolved beyond its historical roots to become a wider platform for Kenyans to raise concerns about governance, accountability, and other pressing national issues.

The police deployment follows an earlier announcement by the National Police Service that security would be enhanced across Nairobi during the Saba Saba period.

The heightened measures are intended to prevent any disruptions and ensure that the public and motorists can go about their activities safely during what is traditionally a busy day for demonstrations and public gatherings.
