Detectives have shot dead a suspected armed robber believed to be behind the recent daring daylight heist at a popular restaurant along General Mathenge Road in Spring Valley, Nairobi.
The operation went down on Tuesday evening in Joska Town, Machakos County, where the suspect had been hiding at his girlfriend's house.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the suspect was part of a larger criminal network that has been terrorising residents across Nairobi, Kiambu, and Machakos counties with a series of violent robberies. The officers acted on crucial intelligence that led them to the hideout in Joska.
The situation turned deadly when detectives from DCI Headquarters and their Matungulu counterparts arrived at the scene and identified themselves.
They ordered the occupants to open the door, but the suspect responded by spraying bullets at them through a kitchen window.
The officers had no choice but to return fire in self-defence, and after securing the premises, they found the suspect lying fatally wounded inside the house.
Police recovered a Beretta pistol loaded with a magazine containing four rounds of 9mm ammunition at the scene. They also found live rounds, spent cartridges, and three mobile phones.
The firearm has been taken to the National Police Service Forensic Laboratory, where ballistic experts will examine it to determine if it was used in other violent crimes across the region.
Preliminary investigations have strongly linked the suspect to the Spring Valley robbery, where armed thugs stormed the restaurant and terrorised diners before snatching phones and other valuables and escaping on motorcycles.
The brazen attack had caused panic among residents and business owners in the upscale neighbourhood.
The DCI has confirmed that a manhunt is currently underway to track down the suspect's accomplices who managed to escape and are still at large.
The detective unit has assured members of the public that they are committed to dismantling violent criminal networks and ensuring that all those involved in serious crimes face the full force of the law.
