The government has today flagged off the distribution of 20,000 Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinders to households in Ol Kalou Constituency, Nyandarua County, in a major push to make clean cooking energy more accessible to low-income families.
The exercise, which took place on Monday morning, was led by Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, who was joined by his counterparts Kello Harsama from the State Department for Petroleum and Betsy Njagi from the Blue Economy and Fisheries docket, alongside Senior Economic Advisor to the President Moses Kuria.
The initiative is part of the broader Gas Yetu Programme, which seeks to accelerate the adoption of clean cooking solutions across the country.
Under the programme, beneficiaries will receive a subsidised LPG starter kit that includes a pre-filled cylinder, a burner, and a grill. The government expects the initiative to improve household health by reducing exposure to indoor air pollution, lower cooking costs for families, and protect the environment through reduced reliance on firewood and other biomass fuels.
Speaking during the launch, PS Harsama emphasised that the programme is designed to make LPG more affordable, especially for households that have traditionally depended on wood fuel for cooking.
He also urged beneficiaries to strictly observe safety precautions when using the gas cylinders and to follow the handling guidelines provided by the National Oil Corporation of Kenya.
Nyandarua becomes the fifth county to benefit from the programme, following earlier rollouts in Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, and Kitui. The event in Ol Kalou was also attended by the Acting CEO of NOCK, Duncan Waziri, among other senior government officials.
The distribution comes just days before the by-elections slated for July 16th, and local leaders have described the initiative as a practical solution that will transform lives by enabling thousands of families to transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
