Nation Media Group Returns to Uganda After Month-Long Shutdown

Nation Media Group has finally switched its cameras back on in Uganda, exactly one month after being forced to shut down operations. The decision to resume work came after the media powerhouse spent weeks in negotiations, and company leadership is now promising to do things differently this time around.

The announcement was made official on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, when the company released a statement saying that services across television, radio, print and digital platforms would be restored gradually as they complete their operational arrangements.

For many Ugandans who depend on Nation Media for their daily news, this is welcome news after a long period without their familiar voices and programmes.

According to the press release, Nation Media Group Uganda's leadership acknowledged the tough period that just passed. They thanked their audience, clients and business partners for staying patient during what must have been a confusing time for everyone involved. The company is banking on this goodwill to rebuild trust and move forward.

What stands out in their statement is the repeated promise to deliver what they call "trusted and balanced journalism." This seems to be their way of addressing the concerns that led to the shutdown in the first place.

Whether this means changes in editorial direction or just a fresh commitment to standards remains to be seen, but the message is clear – they want people to know things will be different.

Joe Muganda, the Chairman of Nation Media Group PLC, signed off on the announcement personally. His involvement signals that this is a serious commitment from the top, not just another routine administrative update. The company has too much to lose and too much to rebuild to take this lightly.

For the media industry in East Africa and the broader conversation about press freedom, this moment matters. How Nation Media handles its return will send important signals about the relationship between media outlets and those in power.
