Three people are counting their blessings after a narrow escape from death when a train engine smashed into their canter truck at the Limuru railway crossing in Kiambu County yesterday.
The dramatic incident has once again brought to the fore the dangerous conditions at the crossing, with residents now demanding urgent action from authorities.
According to the shaken truck driver, the train was reversing from the Nakuru direction when the collision occurred. He claimed that the locomotive did not sound its horn to warn motorists of its approach, something he says could have averted the tragedy.
The driver also pointed to the heavy fog that blanketed the area, saying poor visibility made it difficult for him to see the oncoming train until it was too late. The thick morning mist, common in the Limuru region, compounded the danger at the crossing.
Fortunately, all three occupants of the truck managed to escape with their lives, though they were left badly shaken by the terrifying ordeal.
Following the close shave, residents and motorists who use the crossing daily have renewed their calls on the Kenya Railways Corporation and the Kiambu County Government to step in and install proper safety measures.
They are particularly pushing for the restoration or installation of a railway barrier at the crossing, arguing that such a measure would go a long way in improving traffic control and preventing similar accidents in the future.
This is not the first time such incidents have been reported at the Limuru railway crossing, and locals say they are tired of living in fear every time they approach the junction.
