The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is finally taking shape, and Kenyans now have a clearer picture of how it will actually work. President William Ruto directed months ago that the new formation be rolled out under a modern, technology-driven, and highly mobile operational model.
The President's directive follows a review of proposals for the new unit, which draws its legal backing from the Constitution.
It allows the Inspector General of the National Police Service to establish specialized formations under the existing Formed Units framework.
Nairobi City has grown into a major regional, commercial, financial, and diplomatic hub, and its security needs have grown right along with it.
That is the gap this new formation is meant to close, blending technology with a more visible, responsive police presence. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Governor Johnson Sakaja even travelled to the New York Police Department on June 3, 2026, to benchmark urban policing models and draw lessons from international best practices ahead of the rollout.
Structurally, the formation will be headed by a Commandant who will report to the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (KPS), supported by a Deputy Commandant.
Kamukunji Police Station has been identified as the proposed headquarters of the unit and will host the Integrated Command and Communication Centre (IC4), which will coordinate security operations in real time.
A Multi-Agency Liaison Office will also be established at the headquarters to strengthen coordination between the police, county authorities and other security agencies.
The command chain will then extend through Sub-Region and Sub-County Commanders before reaching police stations, Mtaa police posts and patrol bases.
These units will support specialised functions including diplomatic security, public safety, traffic management, enforcement, investigations and patrol operations.
The structure is designed to create a direct flow of command from the Deputy Inspector General of KPS through the Commandant and Deputy Commandant, with the command centre and multi-agency office serving as key coordination points.
At the grassroots level, Sub-Region and Sub-County Commanders will oversee deployment through local police formations, allowing the unit to respond more efficiently to security needs across the Nairobi metropolitan area.
