Matiang'i Holds Crucial Talks with US Envoy as 2027 Race Intensifies

Fred Matiang'i, the Jubilee Party presidential hopeful, held talks with the acting United States Ambassador to Kenya, Susan Burns, on Monday afternoon. Their discussion centred on Kenya's development and the dreams that Kenyans hold for their country.

After the meeting, Matiang'i said it was a good chance for them to exchange views on many issues facing the nation. He stated that he appreciated the ambassador's insights and the opportunity to share different perspectives. The former Cabinet Secretary did not go into detail about what exactly they talked about, but he made it clear that the conversation was fruitful and covered a wide range of topics.

This meeting is part of Matiang'i's growing political activities as he positions himself for the 2027 general election. He has been stepping up his public appearances and engagements lately, especially as a key figure in the United Opposition coalition. That coalition is working hard to build momentum against President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration.

Interestingly, this was not the first time Ambassador Burns has met with a senior opposition leader recently. Just days earlier, on July 7, she paid a visit to former President Uhuru Kenyatta at his home in Ichaweri, Gatundu, Kiambu County. Uhuru shared photos of that courtesy call on his social media pages, but he also chose not to reveal what was discussed. The US Embassy, for its part, stayed quiet about that meeting as well.

These kinds of diplomatic engagements are becoming more common as the political temperature rises. The American envoy has been holding talks with leaders from both sides of the political divide, and while all these meetings are officially described as courtesy calls, they clearly show that foreign diplomats are keeping a close eye on Kenya's political landscape.

Diplomatic missions routinely meet with both government officials and opposition leaders, and these discussions often touch on governance, regional stability, and bilateral cooperation. For Matiang'i, meeting with such a high-ranking diplomat sends a strong signal that he is being taken seriously on the international stage as he prepares for the upcoming election battle.
