Magistrate And Probation Officer Arrested in Sh150k Bribe Sting

In a dramatic turn of events, a senior magistrate and a probation officer are now cooling their heels in police custody after walking straight into an anti-corruption trap. The two were arrested in connection with bribery allegations that have sent shockwaves through the judicial system.

Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi, based at Kangema Law Courts, and Principal Probation Officer Julius Irungu Njogu were nabbed by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission in a well-orchestrated operation.

According to investigators, the duo had demanded money from a businessman who was awaiting sentencing for a conviction.

The businessman, a Murang'a County trader, had been convicted on July 2, 2026, for obtaining money by false pretenses. He was scheduled to face his final sentence on July 22, 2026.

It is during this period that the suspects allegedly approached him with a proposition that he could secure a lenient sentence if he was willing to part with some cash.

EACC sleuths acting on a report from the businessman quickly swung into action and set up a sting operation. The operation paid off handsomely when the two officials were caught red-handed pocketing a KES 150,000 bribe. It was a classic case of cash-for-justice that the anti-graft agency has been working tirelessly to stamp out.

The arrest of such high-ranking officials has sent a strong message that no one is above the law. The Commission has warned that this is just the beginning and that more officers involved in corruption will face the music. The suspects are currently being processed as detectives prepare formal charges against them.

The businessman, who had gathered courage to report the matter, is being hailed as a hero for coming forward. His bold move has exposed what many believe could be a wider network of corruption within the judicial system.

The public is now watching keenly to see how the case will unfold and whether justice will indeed be served.
