Latest Poll Shows Ruto Still Leads 2027 Race as Sifuna's Stock Rises

President William Ruto continues to be Kenyans' top choice for the 2027 presidential election, according to fresh poll results released this week. The survey shows that Ruto enjoys the backing of 24 percent of respondents, keeping him well ahead of other potential candidates in the race.

However, the political landscape is shifting in some interesting ways. Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi Senator, has seen his support jump significantly from 10 percent to 15 percent in just two months. This marks a notable growth for the politician as he continues to build his profile ahead of the general election.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has seen his numbers drop sharply, falling from 19 percent down to 13 percent in the same period.

Other potential candidates are also in the mix. Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi stands at 14 percent support, while Rigathi Gachagua, sits at 7 percent. Babu Owino has the lowest support among the main contenders at just 2 percent. A significant 20 percent of Kenyans remain undecided about their preferred candidate.

When looking at political parties, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) remains the most popular outfit with 20 percent backing. The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) comes in second at 17 percent, while the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) trails at 12 percent. These numbers show that political party affiliation still matters greatly to Kenyan voters.

Within ODM, there appears to be strong backing for the Edwin Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi faction, with 74 percent of party supporters throwing their weight behind this group. The rival Oburu-led Linda Ground wing attracts just 20 percent of ODM members.

On voter registration, the numbers are encouraging. About 83 percent of Kenyans are already registered voters. Nyanza region leads the way with the highest registration rate at 89 percent. Lower Eastern and Mount Kenya regions follow closely at 86 percent each, while Central Rift comes in third at 85 percent.

In a surprising finding, 62 percent of Kenyans want former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to focus on supporting the strongest opposition candidate rather than running for the presidency himself. This suggests many voters see his role as more valuable in building a united opposition front against Ruto.
