Kenya Power Struggles with Double Trouble as Token System Fails During Blackout

Kenya Power customers have been hit with a double setback after the utility's token vending system crashed just hours following a major nationwide power outage. The technical failure left thousands of customers unable to purchase electricity tokens when they needed them most.

The outage, which struck on Thursday, affected key regions across the country including Nairobi, the Coast, Mt. Kenya and various parts of the Central Rift. Residents in these areas woke up to no power and no way to buy tokens to restore electricity to their homes and businesses.

What made matters worse was that the token vending platform, which is crucial for prepaid electricity customers, went down within twelve hours of the initial blackout announcement. This left many frustrated customers scrambling for solutions when they could have been solving their power problems.

Kenya Power later issued a statement on Thursday morning, acknowledging the problem and apologizing to customers for the inconvenience.

The utility company confirmed that technical issues with their token vending platform had prevented customers from purchasing electricity.

"We sincerely apologize for the distress caused, we are currently experiencing a technical hitch with our token vending system, and our team is actively working to resolve it. Please try purchasing again shortly. Thank you for your patience," the company said.

The company did not provide specific details about what caused the system failure or give an exact timeline for when services would be fully restored. Engineers were reported to be working around the clock to fix the problem and get customers back online.

Many Kenyans took to social media to express their frustration with the situation, questioning why backup systems were not in place to handle such critical outages.
