KDF Foils Multiple Terror Attacks in Lamu, Destroys Four Explosive Devices

Kenya Defence Forces have successfully thwarted several planned terror attacks after discovering and safely destroying four Improvised Explosive Devices that had been planted along major supply routes in Lamu County.

The recovery was made during ongoing Operation Amani Boni, where soldiers have been conducting route clearance and patrols to secure areas frequently used by both security personnel and local residents.

According to a statement released by the military on Sunday evening, troops first detected a concealed pressure plate IED during a routine link-up patrol before it could be triggered. The device was neutralised on the spot.

Days later, Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists also uncovered and safely destroyed three more hidden explosives in the Sarira area, preventing what could have been deadly attacks on roads that see heavy daily traffic.

The military noted that the repeated recovery of these explosives shows terrorist groups operating in the Boni area have increasingly turned to roadside bombs after sustained security operations weakened their ability to carry out conventional attacks.

KDF said the explosives had been planted along key routes used by both security personnel and civilians, pointing to the continued threat posed by terror groups in the region.

Security operations under Operation Amani Boni remain active, with troops maintaining patrols along major supply routes and pursuing those responsible for planting the explosives.

The military said sustained offensive and stabilisation operations have continued to degrade the operational capabilities of terrorist groups while enhancing the safety of residents, businesses, and travellers using the affected routes.

This latest incident comes nearly a year after three Kenya Defence Forces soldiers were killed and several others injured when their vehicle struck an IED along the Sakuri-Kiunga Main Supply Route during a routine patrol in Lamu County.

Since then, security agencies have intensified counter-IED operations, with route clearance missions becoming a key component of efforts to protect both military convoys and civilian traffic from similar attacks.

The military said the successful detection and destruction of the four explosives prevented what could have been deadly attacks on roads used daily by security personnel and members of the public.

Even so, KDF said troops will continue conducting intelligence-driven patrols and counter-terrorism operations to secure Lamu County and protect lives, property and critical transport infrastructure in the area.
