The tragic killing of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, a respected mental health researcher and director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB), has sent shockwaves through Kenya's research and medical communities.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that two suspects are now in lawful custody following the cold-blooded murder that took place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in Nairobi's Upper Hill area.
Dr. Mutiso, who was renowned for her groundbreaking work in mental health research, met her tragic end during what appeared to be a carefully planned ambush while on her morning commute to work.
The shooting occurred at around 9 a.m. at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road, an area she travelled through regularly.
Witnesses who were at the scene have provided chilling accounts of a well-coordinated attack that unfolded in the early morning hours. According to their statements, a Toyota Prado was already parked at the junction when the Uber vehicle carrying Dr. Mutiso arrived and stopped alongside it. Within moments, a motorcycle carrying three men approached the car.
One of the assailants allegedly opened fire, shooting Dr. Mutiso twice in the head at close range before fleeing the scene on the motorcycle. The suspected getaway vehicle, the Toyota Prado, sped away immediately after the shooting.
In a desperate race against time, the Uber driver rushed Dr. Mutiso to the Kenyatta National Hospital Emergency Centre, hoping to save her life. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival, devastating her family, colleagues, and the broader medical and research fraternity who had come to admire her work and dedication to understanding mental health challenges across Africa.
The DCI's swift response to the incident has been commendable. Homicide detectives, working alongside specialised investigative and forensic teams, have pursued multiple investigative leads through witness interviews, forensic analysis, and targeted operations.
This multi-pronged approach led to the identification and arrest of two persons of interest who are now in custody and undergoing interrogation as part of the ongoing investigations.
Further details about the investigation have revealed that ballistic experts recovered two spent cartridges from inside the Uber vehicle, which is now being held as a key exhibit in the case.
The vehicle is expected to provide crucial forensic evidence that may help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators are also examining mobile phones belonging to both Dr. Mutiso and the driver as they work to reconstruct the movements and communications of those involved before the fatal shooting.
The DCI has also confirmed that additional investigative actions remain underway as detectives continue to analyse the recovered exhibits and pursue other critical leads.
However, the identities of the two persons of interest are being withheld at this stage to safeguard the integrity of the ongoing investigation and ensure that justice is properly served.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation to establish the full circumstances of this shocking incident.
Officials have stated that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice in accordance with the law. The DCI has also conveyed its sincere condolences to Dr. Mutiso's family, friends, and loved ones, while appreciating the continued cooperation and support of members of the public as investigations progress.
