The National Police Service has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the recent wave of political violence that has been disturbing the peace across the country.
According to a statement released by the police, they are now conducting a detailed analysis of videos that have been doing rounds on social media to help them with further investigations.
The police have made it clear that this is just the beginning, as they are working hard to ensure that all those involved in planning and executing the violence are brought to book.
"A more detailed analysis of the video, alongside wider investigative efforts, is underway with a view to making further arrests," the National Police Service said in their statement.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has also stepped in and directed the Internal Affairs Unit to speed up investigations into all aspects of the violence. The IG wants the unit to look into every angle, including identifying any operational gaps that might have allowed this incident to happen in the first place.
This move shows that the police leadership is taking this matter very seriously and wants to make sure that such incidents do not happen again.
This latest incident comes at a time when political violence has been on the rise in the country. We have been seeing hired goons attacking political rallies of those believed to be opponents, all in an effort to score political points. These thugs are being used by certain individuals to disrupt the campaigns of their rivals, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
However, the Interior Ministry has on several occasions warned members of the political class that nobody will be spared, regardless of their political affiliation.
The ministry has made it clear that everyone will be held accountable if found to be sponsoring violence. This warning is aimed at sending a strong message to politicians who think they can use violence to gain an advantage over their opponents.
At the same time, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has also weighed in on the matter with a stern warning. The IEBC has said that it will take action against politicians found to be causing or sponsoring violence, including disqualifying them from the 2027 elections.
This is a significant move that shows the commission is serious about ensuring that the next general elections are free from violence and intimidation.
The commission's warning should serve as a wake-up call to all politicians who think they can use violence as a tool to achieve their political ambitions. With the 2027 elections drawing closer, it is important that all political actors play by the rules and ensure that the country remains peaceful.
