A coalition of United Opposition leaders has kicked off a major three-day political tour across Kenya's Western region, with the main goal of connecting with ordinary Kenyans at the grassroots level and building momentum ahead of what many expect to be a significant period of political realignment in the country.
The delegation is being led by Democratic Action Party–Kenya boss Eugene Wamalwa, who is no stranger to Western Kenya politics. Joining him is a heavyweight lineup that includes former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now leading the Democratic Change Party, Wiper Party's Kalonzo Musyoka, People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, and Cleophas Malala. Several Members of Parliament are also part of the team, among them Eseli Simiyu, Wafula Wamunyinyi, Caleb Amisi, and Peter Salasya.
The tour got underway on Friday in Luanda, with the leaders making stops in Khwirumbi, Khayega, Malava, Mayuge, and Shikomari. At each stop, the principals are expected to speak directly to locals and hold informal conversations with residents the kind of ground-level engagement that party rallies alone cannot achieve.
Saturday's programme starts with a morning media briefing before the delegation fans out to Shianda, Bumala, Nambale, Harambee Market, and Ekitale town, where public rallies and community meetings are lined up throughout the day.
The final day on Sunday will take the coalition through Kibabii, Chewele, Misikhu, Naitiri, and Kiminini, wrapping up in Kitale town to conclude what is shaping up to be one of the most visible opposition mobilisation efforts in the region in recent times.
