In a dramatic operation along the busy Eldoret-Nakuru Highway, police have arrested two suspects in possession of 154 kilograms of cannabis sativa valued at approximately Ksh.4.62 million.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit acted on credible intelligence that a vehicle registration number KDX 264K was being used to ferry narcotics along the highway.
According to the DCI, officers laid an ambush along the highway after receiving the tip-off. However, when they signalled the driver to stop, the motorist allegedly ignored the orders and sped off, triggering a high-speed chase towards the Subukia area.
The pursuit came to an end after detectives successfully immobilised the vehicle by deflating one of its front tyres, forcing it to come to a stop.
The two suspects, identified as David Wafula and Loise Akoth, were arrested at the scene. A search conducted on the vehicle led to the recovery of seven sacks containing cannabis sativa weighing a total of 154 kilograms. Investigators believe the drugs had been carefully concealed for transportation.
The suspects are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue ahead of their arraignment. The recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits.
