Rigathi Gachagua Says He Is Ready for Court Ruling on Impeachment

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said he is prepared to accept whatever decision the High Court makes on Monday, June 8, regarding his impeachment.

Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), was removed from office on October 17, 2024. The Senate found him guilty of breaking the Constitution and gross misconduct. Since then, he has argued in court that he did not get a fair hearing and that the public was not properly involved before he was kicked out.

Speaking during a church service in Karen on Sunday, Gachagua said he believes the judiciary is independent and will give him justice.

“We are ready for whatever outcome. If the three judges rule that we were treated unfairly and against the law and the Constitution, and lift the impeachment, we shall be grateful to God. We shall be grateful that there is a justice system in Kenya that works,” he told congregants.

He added that he has confidence in the courts to be impartial, not just for himself but for the millions of Kenyans who support him across the country.

However, the former deputy president made it clear that if the ruling does not go his way, he will appeal the decision.

Gachagua also urged his supporters to stay calm no matter what happens on Monday. He reminded them that they remained peaceful even when he was first removed from office. He specifically asked them not to take part in any violence or illegal activities. Instead, he said, they should express their anger at the ballot box in August 2027.

On Monday, a three-judge bench will deliver its verdict on petitions that challenge whether the process to remove Gachagua was legal and constitutional. Lawyers on both sides finished presenting their arguments before the court on May 22. Gachagua’s legal team raised 18 different grounds to challenge the entire impeachment process.
