ODM Party Removes Edwin Sifuna as Secretary-General

The Orange Democratic Movement party has officially removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary-General. The decision was made by the party's National Executive Committee after reviewing a report from the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee, which had been looking into a complaint against Sifuna.

According to a statement issued on Monday, June 22, the NEC unanimously agreed to adopt the committee's recommendations and endorse Sifuna's removal from office. This brings to an end a lengthy dispute that had seen the Senator repeatedly try to stop the disciplinary proceedings against him through the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.

Sifuna had initially obtained orders from the tribunal stopping the party from taking action against him. However, those orders were vacated on March 26, 2026, allowing the internal disciplinary process to move forward. He later returned to the tribunal seeking to stop the process once again, but on April 9, 2026, the tribunal ruled that ODM could continue hearing the case. The tribunal only barred the party from communicating or implementing any decision until the application challenging the process was determined.

The party said Sifuna was invited to appear before the committee and was even granted adjournments and additional particulars regarding the allegations against him. However, when the matter came up on April 20, 2026, Sifuna did not show up. His lead counsel, Senior Counsel Isaac Okero, informed the committee that his client was unwilling to proceed, citing bias within the committee. The committee then proceeded to hear the matter in his absence.

ODM noted that the tribunal ultimately dismissed Sifuna's complaint, holding that his concerns would be more appropriately addressed through the party's internal dispute resolution mechanisms. Following the decision, the party wished the former Secretary General well in his future endeavours.

This comes just days after Sifuna was also removed from the Senate Committee on Energy. The changes were announced on Wednesday, June 17, by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who tabled a motion seeking to reconstitute various Senate committees. Under the proposed changes, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang replaced Sifuna in the committee chaired by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.
