The National Police Service has opened a formal investigation into an incident that was captured on video during the June 25 Gen Z anniversary demonstrations in Nakuru.
The video, which went viral on social media, appeared to show police officers handling a protester who was living with disability in a manner that sparked serious public concern and debate across the country.
According to a statement released on Friday, NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that the Service had taken note of the footage and acknowledged the concerns raised by members of the public.
Nyaga said the incident brought into question whether police conduct during the event had met the expected standards of professionalism and respect for human rights.
He made it clear that the NPS does not tolerate any form of unprofessional behaviour, excessive use of force, or breaches of the established police procedures that are meant to protect the dignity and rights of all people.
The Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has now directed the Internal Affairs Unit to carry out a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation into the matter.
The investigators have been given a seven-day deadline to complete their work and submit their findings. Kanja said that appropriate action will be taken based on what the investigation uncovers.
In the statement, the NPS emphasised that it strongly condemns all forms of unprofessional conduct and excessive force by its officers. The Service reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards brutality, misconduct, and any actions that undermine public trust in the police.
The statement also stressed that the police remain committed to providing professional policing that serves and protects all Kenyans, residents, and visitors while fully respecting their constitutional rights.
The NPS has appealed to members of the public who have any information that could help with the investigation to come forward.
