Nairobi Assembly Approves Erection of Raila Odinga Monument at Supreme Court Roundabout

The Nairobi County Assembly has given the green light for a monument to be built in honour of former Prime Minister the late Raila Odinga, with the site now set to be the Supreme Court roundabout in the city centre.

This comes after an amendment was passed that changes the original location from Uhuru Park to the busy roundabout near the Supreme Court buildings.

The proposal was first brought forward by Nairobi West Member of County Assembly John Rex Omoleh, who had initially wanted the monument to be erected at Uhuru Park. However, in a memorandum sent to the County Assembly Clerk, Omoleh suggested moving it to the Supreme Court roundabout instead.

According to the Assembly, the monument will stand as a tribute to the  late Raila Odinga's lifetime of sacrifice in fighting for good governance, democracy, the rule of law, and infrastructure development across the country.

Many Kenyans have been following this story closely, and the decision has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some praising the move while others question the timing and location of the proposed monument.

The Assembly members who supported the amendment argued that the Supreme Court roundabout is a more fitting location given Mr Odinga's long-standing association with constitutional reform and his push for judicial independence over the years.

The late Raila Odinga was a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades, and his supporters view this as a fitting recognition of his contributions to the nation's democratic journey.

The county government has yet to announce when construction will begin or how much the project will cost taxpayers.

For now, Nairobi residents and visitors to the city centre can expect to see a new structure taking shape at the Supreme Court roundabout in the coming months, should the county government move forward with implementation.

The monument will become another landmark in a city already filled with statues and memorials honouring Kenya's founding fathers and other prominent leaders.
