Missing Form Three Student Found Dead After Nanyuki Ebola Facility Protest Shooting

A 16-year-old Form Three student who went missing during the violent demonstrations in Nanyuki has been found dead. The body of Sylvester Muigai Ndung’u, a student at Thingithu Secondary School, was discovered at the Nanyuki Referral Hospital mortuary after a two-day search by his worried family.

The young boy had been sent home from school to collect a school fees balance of KSh 5,700. That is when he got caught up in the chaos. Residents of Nanyuki had taken to the streets to protest against a proposed Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Airbase. What started as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned ugly when clashes broke out between protesters and police officers.

According to relatives who spoke to our reporter, Muigai was shot in the head during the unrest. The family says the boy was not part of any violent group. He was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time, trying to make his way back to school after getting the money from his mother.

His mother, Lucy Kagure, is now crying for justice. She says her son was innocent and had his whole life ahead of him. She wants the government to step in and find out who pulled the trigger. She also wants answers on why police would shoot at young school children who are not holding any weapons.

The protests in Nanyuki continue as residents strongly oppose the planned Ebola quarantine facility. They say the government did not consult them before deciding to turn the airbase into a quarantine centre. For now, the family of Sylvester Muigai Ndung’u is left mourning a young life cut short, a bright future turned into a sad memory.
