A normal night out turned into a very expensive lesson for a Kenyan woman who says her date disappeared halfway through their meeting, leaving her to pay a huge bill she did not run up.
The woman, named Juliette Awata, shared her story online to warn others. She said a man called Allan Ochieng contacted her on social media. At first, she liked what she saw. His profile made him look attractive and well-off, so when he asked her out for drinks, she agreed.
They met at a restaurant inside Sarit Centre. According to Juliette, things started off fine. But at some point, Allan said he needed to step outside to take an important phone call. She waited. And waited. But he never came back.
After some time, she decided to ask the waitress if her date had already paid the bill. That is when she got the bad news. He had left without paying a single shilling.
What made it worse was the total amount. Juliette says she personally only ordered items worth about Ksh 1,550. But the full bill came to Ksh 10,000. Since her date was gone, the restaurant expected her to clear everything.
Feeling cheated and frustrated, she tried to reach Allan online. She sent him a message warning that she would expose him publicly. But according to her, he quickly deactivated all his social media accounts and disappeared completely.
The story has since received many reactions online. Some people feel sorry for Juliette and say what the man did was cruel. Others are using her experience as a reminder to be very careful when meeting someone for the first time, especially if that person is the one who invited you out.
For now, Juliette is left with a painful bill and a warning for anyone planning a first date: make sure you know who you are sitting with, or be ready to pay the price.
