Two-time world champion Gudaf Tsegay has been banned from athletics for four months. The Athletics Integrity Unit, or AIU, announced the decision on Friday. The 29-year-old Ethiopian failed to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption, known as a TUE, for a banned substance.
Tsegay tested positive for a metabolite of Letrozole in early December during an out of competition test. Letrozole is on the list of banned substances. She was told about the anti-doping rule violation in late January. In mid-February, she sent a TUE application to World Athletics.
World Athletics, the sport's governing body, agreed that she met the conditions for a TUE. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, turned down her request for a retroactive TUE. After that, Tsegay entered a resolution process with the AIU and WADA. The process ended with a four-month ban that runs from June 1 to September 30.
Tsegay has had a brilliant career so far. She won the world 5,000m title in Eugene, United States, in 2022. A year later in Budapest, she became the world 10,000m champion. She also earned a bronze medal in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics and is a two-time indoor world champion.
