EACC Nabs Fake Investigator in Ksh2 Million Extortion Sting

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a man who was posing as one of their investigators in a scheme to extort money from a company director in Narok County.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, allegedly contacted a director of a company that has a contract with the Narok County Government. He falsely claimed the firm was under investigation for corruption and demanded Ksh2 million to stop any further action.

Stretnews.co.ke has established that the suspect went as far as arranging a meeting at a hotel, where he expected to receive part of the payment. However, the company director reported the matter to EACC, prompting the anti-graft agency to launch a sting operation.

The operation came to a head on Monday, June 22, when the suspect was arrested while allegedly receiving Ksh200,000, which was part of the bribe he had demanded.

EACC confirmed that the suspect is not an employee of the commission and had been impersonating an official to defraud members of the public.

The commission has since cautioned Kenyans to be wary of individuals claiming to be investigators outside official procedures. They emphasized that all summonses are issued in writing and require appearances at their offices.

EACC also clarified that it does not conduct official meetings in hotels or solicit payments to influence investigations. The agency has urged anyone approached by such individuals to report the matter immediately.

This arrest comes amid a wave of anti-corruption operations by EACC, which recently also netted Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials over bribery allegations linked to tax assessments.

The suspect is currently being processed at the Integrity Centre as investigations continue.
