Kenya’s elite General Service Unit (GSU) has a new boss. Johana Tonui has been named the Commandant of the GSU with immediate effect, in a move that signals fresh changes within the country’s security apparatus.
Tonui is no stranger to high-stakes security roles. He was previously picked from the Kenya Police Service and seconded to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), where he served as the director of wildlife security. Before his latest appointment, he was working at the Directorate of Operations within the Kenya Police Service as an Assistant Inspector General (AIG).
Now, Tonui takes charge of the GSU, a critical unit that also includes elite paramilitary teams. These forces play a key role in Kenya’s overall security structure, especially in responding to serious threats and emergencies.
The outgoing GSU Commandant, SAIG Ranson Lomodooni, has been recalled to police headquarters. He is expected to be redeployed elsewhere. Lomodooni had only held the position since July 12, 2024, when he took over from the current Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat. Lagat himself had previously taken over from the current Inspector General, Douglas Kanja.
In other changes, AIG Paul Mumo has been appointed as the new Director of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU). Meanwhile, AIG Fredrick Nyongesa, who has been serving at the GSU headquarters, is now the deputy commandant of the unit.
These appointments come as part of ongoing adjustments within Kenya’s police leadership, aiming to strengthen command at key security units.
