Chaos in Kajiado as 45 Arrested for Blocking President Ruto’s Motorcade

Police are investigating a politician from Kajiado North for allegedly sponsoring a group of people to block President William Ruto's convoy during a church event in Kajiado West on Sunday.

The dramatic incident happened in Nkarusa, Kajiado West, where the President had gone to lead a fundraiser for the construction of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church headquarters. President Ruto was accompanied by Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga and Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku at the Sunday service.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspects were ferried to the area by bus and matatu ahead of the public event attended by the Head of State. Upon arrival, the group allegedly blocked the road and obstructed the presidential motorcade as Ruto was leaving after the church service. The suspects were caught singing "Wantam" songs before police intervened and dispersed them. They were later arrested while boarding vehicles to leave the scene.

Investigators claim the politician from Kajiado North mobilised and facilitated the group to attend the President's event, where they were allegedly instructed to disrupt proceedings by chanting "Wantam" slogans. The slogan "Wantam" – meaning "one term" – has become popular among government critics and supporters of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

On Monday, the 45 suspects appeared before Ngong Chief Magistrate Ariba Kuwa. Five women admitted to the charges, while the remaining 40 male suspects denied any wrongdoing. Each suspect was released on a bond of Ksh100,000 or an alternative cash bail of the same amount.

The case involving the five women who admitted to the charges will be mentioned again on June 18, 2026. For the 40 male suspects who denied the allegations, the matter will be mentioned after 14 days to allow police to continue with ongoing investigations.

When such incidents occur, the government has been blaming the opposition, while the opposition accuses the government of using goons to suppress opposition and interfere with opposition-led events. Police are also looking into security lapses that allowed the group to block Ruto's motorcade in the first place.
