The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has confirmed the arrest of three more suspects connected to last Friday's shocking invasion at All Saints' Cathedral in Nairobi. The suspects George Omondi Otieno, Effenburg Wanyama Khisa, and Melvin Alumasa Bwani were tracked down and picked up at separate locations across Nairobi County, bringing the total number of people in custody to five.
Detectives from DCI headquarters working alongside officers from the Kilimani offices recovered a red Boxer motorcycle that investigators believe was used during the attack. Mobile phones belonging to the suspects were also seized and will be subjected to forensic examination as part of the ongoing probe.
The chaos on June 12 erupted right at the church entrance, where a gang of men confronted security guards and forced their way onto the church grounds. Their mission, it emerged, was to violently disrupt a budget review meeting taking place inside. CCTV footage captured the mayhem as it unfolded. One victim was overpowered and robbed while trying to escape to the third floor, while another was cornered before police officers managed to intervene.
In a startling turn, one of the men allegedly hired to cause the disruption came forward and spoke to Citizen TV. He revealed that the group was financed by a Member of Parliament and that plain-clothes police officers were involved in executing the operation. He also narrated how they were initially told they would be disrupting a political meeting linked to opposition figure Rigathi Gachagua, but the target changed once they arrived in Nairobi's CBD. Each participant was promised Ksh 2,000 and told to source a motorcycle and ride in pairs.
The National Council of Churches of Kenya has since condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling on the Inspector General of Police to ensure all those responsible are arrested and face justice. The DCI says the investigation is still active and officers are pursuing additional leads to apprehend suspects who remain at large.
