The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has told Kenyans to prepare for heavy rains starting this Friday, May 8, through Tuesday, May 12, 2026. According to the weatherman, the rains will mostly affect Western Kenya, Central Kenya, the Rift Valley region, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coastal region.
In Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and around Lake Victoria, counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, and Baringo will receive heavy rains. Other counties in these regions include Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. The weatherman said rain in these areas will mostly begin in the afternoon, after a cloudy morning, followed by light showers around mid-morning.
Central Kenya, which includes Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi, will also experience heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms. Residents in these counties have been urged to watch out for possible floods.
At the same time, coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the Tana Delta are expected to receive moderate amounts of rain. However, the southeastern lowland counties of Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni will remain mostly cloudy and dry.
Apart from the heavy rains, the meteorological department has warned Kenyans, especially those living in Central Kenya, to get ready for very cold nights over the next five days. Night temperatures in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi will drop to as low as 9°C.
On the other hand, Northern Kenya and counties in the coastal region will remain hot, with daytime temperatures expected to rise to 37°C. This means Kenyans in different parts of the country will experience very different weather conditions at the same time, from freezing nights to scorching heat and heavy rains. People have been advised to take necessary precautions depending on where they live.
