Exclusive: Inside the Gachagua-Koimburi Fallout – Demands, Threats, and a Dramatic Defection

In a rapidly escalating political drama, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly detailed a tense, private meeting with Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi, revealing a list of demands and an ultimatum that preceded the lawmaker's defection to President William Ruto's camp.

The clash, which has exposed deep fissures within the opposition party, began when Koimburi announced his exit from DCP on Wednesday, January 14. He accused the leadership of intimidation, sidelining loyal members, and running a corrupt nomination process, specifically within Kiambu County.

“We who have been there are pushed aside,” Koimburi told the press, alleging the party was “collecting money from people's pockets so that they can offer people party tickets to vie.”

However, in a detailed counter-statement released on Thursday, January 15, DCP not only dismissed Koimburi’s membership claims but laid bare a startling account of a secret meeting held just days prior.

The Fateful Meeting: Demands and an Ultimatum

According to the DCP, on the morning of Monday, January 12, a "stressed" Koimburi urgently requested a meeting with Gachagua. The party leader granted the request, and Koimburi arrived at Gachagua’s private office at 5 p.m. that same day, accompanied by DCP’s Deputy National Chairperson, Peter Mwathi.

The party’s narrative depicts a meeting fraught with grievance and bold political maneuvering. Koimburi reportedly expressed “disbelief and annoyance” that his competitor from the last general elections, Aloise Kinyanjui, had been allowed to join DCP. He viewed this as a profound betrayal, citing his past loyalty, including voting against Gachagua’s impeachment.

His frustrations then crystallized into three key demands:

1. The immediate removal of Aloise Kinyanjui from the party.
2. A written assurance that he (Koimburi) would be given a direct nomination to fly the DCP flag, bypassing primary elections.
3. An exemption from attending public functions with Gachagua until February of next year, a move the party alleges was intended “to slow down the prosecution of the various cases facing him.”

The DCP claims Koimburi attached a stark ultimatum to these conditions: if they were not met, he would defect and rejoin President William Ruto’s camp.

DCP’s Rejection and Counterclaim

The party states that Gachagua “politely informed” Koimburi that his request for a direct ticket was impossible, emphasizing that DCP is a democratic party where candidates are determined through fair nominations. They also flatly rejected his other conditions.

In a move to fundamentally undermine Koimburi’s public narrative, the DCP’s statement insisted the MP had “never been its member” and had never participated in party activities. They noted that despite being a perceived ally, Koimburi had not accompanied Gachagua to any public function in the last six months, “while allegedly giving all manner of excuses.”

A Fractured Alliance and a Wider Problem

The public airing of this private confrontation highlights more than a personal rift; it signals significant turbulence within Gachagua’s DCP. The revelation of Koimburi’s demands paints a picture of an MP seeking special protections and privileges, while the party’s forceful rebuttal aims to portray him as an outsider attempting internal blackmail.

Koimburi’s allegations of a "pay-to-vie" culture within the party, particularly in the vote-rich Kiambu County, strike at the heart of its credibility. Meanwhile, the DCP’s strategy of publishing the intimate details of the breakdown suggests a calculated effort to control the narrative, framing the defection not as a loss, but as a removal of a disruptive element.

As Koimburi settles into Ruto’s camp, the fallout leaves DCP grappling with public accusations of corruption and internal discord, while raising questions about its cohesion and discipline ahead of the next electoral cycle. The war of words has now set the stage for a bitter political battle, with both sides armed with damaging claims against the other.
